Fourth Year | Semester 1&2
Naru
A client asked us to design a screen-free sensory toy for children aged 3–6, using NFC, projection and audio to create interactive experiences. The product needed to be safe, calming, child-operated and portable, with a target cost of around £100.
Taking inspiration from the client’s feedback and exploring simple, recognisable shapes, we developed the idea of a volcano. This evolved into Naru — a volcano-shaped, screen-free sensory projector and speaker. Children can independently use NFC cards or characters to change the projected visuals and matching sounds, creating calming sensory experiences without needing a phone or parental assistance.

Final Design
The final Naru design combines a volcano-inspired form with a projector, speaker and NFC system. Children can use interchangeable NFC cards or characters to independently change the projected visuals and matching sounds, creating calming sensory experiences without needing a phone or parental assistance. The final design was developed to be simple, engaging and easy for children aged 3–6 to use.
