Product Design Engineering in Industry
Designing stainless-steel pump and motor solutions for the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries
My Journey with BestPump
Since August 2025, I’ve been balancing my studies at the University of Strathclyde with working as a Product Design Engineer in industry. This experience has allowed me to apply what I learn at university to real-world projects while developing my skills in design, CAD, manufacturing and problem-solving.
I’ve loved gaining experience alongside my studies and plan to continue working throughout my Master’s, building on my knowledge and growing as an engineer.

I work on a wide range of stainless-steel pumps and components, mainly for the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries. My work varies from modifying existing designs to developing components for specific customer requirements.

A lot of my time is spent in Fusion designing and modifying components, creating drawings and working through engineering problems. I also get to see how these designs are manufactured and work closely with the wider team.

Every project comes with different requirements and constraints. I have to consider everything from dimensions and materials to manufacturing, assembly and the customer's needs, finding a solution that works both technically and practically.

Balancing university with working in industry has helped me connect the two. I can take the engineering knowledge I learn at university and apply it to real projects, while my industry experience has made me more practical and confident in my approach to design.
The Design Process
01 — Understand
Understand what the customer needs, review existing designs and identify the key requirements, dimensions, materials and constraints.
02 — Design
Create or modify components in CAD, considering functionality, materials, tolerances, assembly and manufacturability.
03 — Review
Check the design against requirements, discuss it with the wider manufacturing team and some components are going to be sourced, and make changes where needed.
04 — Manufacture
Produce engineering drawings and manufacturing information and send out for any materials we may need to produce this and make the Bill of materials so everything can be ordered by the sales team before seeing the design move from CAD into a physical component or finished pump.
My Experience
I’ve found that the best part of engineering is seeing an idea become something real. My experience in industry has strengthened my passion for designing practical solutions and solving problems with a real purpose. A key part of this has been conducting on-site visits—engaging directly with clients and teams to talk through their challenges, assess their exact needs in the field, and translate those requirements into effective engineering solutions.
I’m excited to continue developing as an engineer, bring my hands-on experience into new challenges, and contribute to a team where I can keep learning, designing, and making a tangible impact.
